Commotion erupted yesterday in Pemba District at a Patriotic Front (PF) rally that was held in Pemba town few after some unknown people threw teargas canisters minutes before PF National Mobilization Committee Member Bizwell Mutale addressed the crowd.
Order was retained when the police took control of the situation but no one was caught.
But PF national mobilization committee member Bizwell Mutale accused the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) of being behind the act with the aim to disrupt the programme.
Mr. Mutale said UPND should stop politics of violence stating that his party will not be intimidated by violence.
He said PF will not rest until Southern Province becomes the stronghold of the ruling party.
And UPND Southern Province Chairperson Billiard Makwembo described the allegation by Mr. Mutale as malicious.
He says the UPND is focused on important national issues such as the mobile issuance of NRCs and would never stomp so low to cause violence.
Mr. Makwembo says the UPND have no access to teargas canisters and other weapons as these can only be accessed by police and those in government.
